DC Trip

While Kallie played with Lolly and Popsy, Kyle and I traveled to Washington, D.C.  We had a fantastic time and it was a lot easier being gone from Kallie than I thought.  Thanks to technology, we were never that far away.

Day 1:  Arrival

We arrived in D.C. mid afternoon, checked into our hotel, and immediately went to Arlington Cemetery.  We were able to catch the changing of the guards and see some beautiful sites.  After the cemetery, we hoofed it over the Potomac River to the Lincoln Memorial.  From there we made the big loop around all the monuments and memorials.  What an amazing site.

Day 2:  Smithsonian Mania

We got up early the next day to make the first tour at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.  It was a pretty cool tour.  Next was the Holocaust Museum.  It was incredible and sad.  After that we experienced the food truck craziness because Kyle was determined to eat at a food truck (we ate at one the next day too).  After that, Natural History and American History museums.  And a trip up the Old Post Office Tower for a good view.  We did a  lot of walking this day, too, so made sure we took in all the sites we could, including the White House.

Day 3:  Government Day

We had a Capitol tour first thing in the morning.  This was one of Kyle's favorite tours - just too short.  Our tour guide did a really good job.  We stopped in the Supreme Court and Library of Congress to see the beautiful architecture.  Food truck #2, then Air & Space museum.  We were pretty museumed out after that but I wanted to go to the National Portrait Gallery to see all the President's portraits.  I really liked that exhibit.  And they had just enough reading to where your eyes don't glaze over.

Day 4:  A Little Relaxation

We slowed down a little bit this day.  First thing we went to the Ford's Theater to see the museum and booth where Lincoln was shot.  After that, we went to Eastern Market which was really cool.  They were selling all kinds of things, food, crafts, furniture, clothes.  I told Kyle if I lived near there I would go every Saturday for my fresh produce.  We then walked to the Newseum.  One of the only museums we paid for but it was so worth it.  What an amazing, put together museum.  One of our favorites - and it was a 2 day pass so if you didn't see it all, you could go back the next day.  It rained that day so we called it an early night.  Oh, and our hotel had free wine hour at 5 everyday so we made it back for that.

Day 5:  Mt Vernon and Wrap Up

We took the Metro and bus to Mount Vernon.  I really liked walking around the grounds, visiting the home and going through the museum.  It was very well put together.  And a beautiful place.  After Mt. Vernon, we headed back to DC and finished up the rest of the Newseum.  We then walked around and enjoyed our last night in DC.

Such a fun trip with a fun person!  I always say I'm going to plan some easy going trips but it never happens.  Another exciting (and informative - I found out I don't remember my history very well) in the books.
